A Vernacular for Coherent Logic
We propose a simple, yet expressive proof representation from which proofs
for different proof assistants can easily be generated. The representation uses
only a few inference rules and is based on a frag- ment of first-order logic
called coherent logic. Coherent logic has been recognized by a number of
researchers as a suitable logic for many ev- eryday mathematical developments.
The proposed proof representation is accompanied by a corresponding XML format
and by a suite of XSL transformations for generating formal proofs for
Isabelle/Isar and Coq, as well as proofs expressed in a natural language form
(formatted in LATEX or in HTML). Also, our automated theorem prover for
coherent logic exports proofs in the proposed XML format. All tools are

Environmental pollutants from the Scott and Shackleton expeditions during the ‘Heroic Age’ of Antarctic exploration
Early explorers to Antarctica built wooden huts and brought huge quantities of supplies and equipment to support their geographical and scientific studies for several years. When the expeditions ended and relief ships arrived, a rapid exodus frequently allowed only essential items to be taken north. The huts and thousands of items were left behind. Fuel depots with unused containers of petroleum products, asbestos materials, and diverse chemicals were also left at the huts. This investigation found high concentrations of polyaromatic hydrocarbons in soils under and around the historic fuel depots, including anthracene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, chrysene, fluorene, and pyrene, as well as benzo[a]anthracene, benzo[a]pyrene, and fluoranthene, which are recognized carcinogens. Asbestos materials within the huts have been identified and extensive amounts of fragmented asbestos were found littering the ground around the Cape Evans hut. These materials are continually abraded and fragmented as tourists walk over them and the coarse scoria breaks and grinds down the materials. A chemical spill, within the Cape Evans hut, apparently from caustic substances from one of the scientific experiments, has caused an unusual deterioration and defibration on affected woods. Although these areas are important historic sites protected by international treaties, the hazardous waste materials left by the early explorers should be removed and remedial action taken to restore the site to as pristine a condition as possible. Recommendations are discussed for international efforts to study and clean up these areas, where the earliest environmental pollution in Antarctica was produced
A formalized general theory of syntax with bindings
We present the formalization of a theory of syntax with bindings that has been developed and refined over the last decade to support several large formalization efforts. Terms are defined for an arbitrary number of constructors of varying numbers of inputs, quotiented to alpha-equivalence and sorted according to a binding signature. The theory includes a rich collection of properties of the standard operators on terms, such as substitution and freshness. It also includes induction and recursion principles and support for semantic interpretation, all tailored for smooth interaction with the bindings and the standard operators
A Proof Strategy Language and Proof Script Generation for Isabelle/HOL
We introduce a language, PSL, designed to capture high level proof strategies
in Isabelle/HOL. Given a strategy and a proof obligation, PSL's runtime system
generates and combines various tactics to explore a large search space with low
memory usage. Upon success, PSL generates an efficient proof script, which
bypasses a large part of the proof search. We also present PSL's monadic
interpreter to show that the underlying idea of PSL is transferable to other

Screening fungi isolated from historic Discovery Hut on Ross Island, Antarctica for cellulose degradation
To survive in Antarctica, early explorers of Antarctica's Heroic Age erected wooden buildings and brought in large quantities of supplies. The introduction of wood and other organic materials may have provided new nutrient sources for fungi that were indigenous to Antarctica or were brought in with the materials. From 30 samples taken from Discovery Hut, 156 filamentous fungi were isolated on selective media. Of these, 108 were screened for hydrolytic activity on carboxymethyl cellulose, of which 29 demonstrated activities. Endo-1, 4-β-glucanase activity was confirmed in the extracellular supernatant from seven isolates when grown at 4°C, and also when they were grown at 15°C. Cladosporium oxysporum and Geomyces sp. were shown to grow on a variety of synthetic cellulose substrates and to use cellulose as a nutrient source at temperate and cold temperatures. The research findings from the present study demonstrate that Antarctic filamentous fungi isolated from a variety of substrates (wood, straw, and food stuffs) are capable of cellulose degradation and can grow well at low temperatures
Hidden breakpoints in genome alignments
During the course of evolution, an organism's genome can undergo changes that
affect the large-scale structure of the genome. These changes include gene
gain, loss, duplication, chromosome fusion, fission, and rearrangement. When
gene gain and loss occurs in addition to other types of rearrangement,
breakpoints of rearrangement can exist that are only detectable by comparison
of three or more genomes. An arbitrarily large number of these "hidden"
breakpoints can exist among genomes that exhibit no rearrangements in pairwise
comparisons.
We present an extension of the multichromosomal breakpoint median problem to
genomes that have undergone gene gain and loss. We then demonstrate that the
median distance among three genomes can be used to calculate a lower bound on
the number of hidden breakpoints present. We provide an implementation of this
calculation including the median distance, along with some practical
improvements on the time complexity of the underlying algorithm.
We apply our approach to measure the abundance of hidden breakpoints in
simulated data sets under a wide range of evolutionary scenarios. We
demonstrate that in simulations the hidden breakpoint counts depend strongly on
relative rates of inversion and gene gain/loss. Finally we apply current
multiple genome aligners to the simulated genomes, and show that all aligners
introduce a high degree of error in hidden breakpoint counts, and that this
error grows with evolutionary distance in the simulation. Our results suggest
that hidden breakpoint error may be pervasive in genome alignments.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

We describe a complete procedure for deriving nonemptiness witnesses in the general mutually recursive, nested case—nonemptiness being a proviso for introducing types in higher-order logic
Trophic roles of tadpoles in tropical Australian streams
Tadpoles can be abundant consumers in stream ecosystems, and may influence the structure and function of streams through their feeding activities and interactions with other organisms. To understand the contribution of tadpoles to stream functioning, and the potential impact of their loss, it is necessary to determine their diets and how they might influence food-web structure. Using gut-content analysis and stable-isotope analysis of N and C, we determined the main food sources and trophic positions of tadpoles of five native frog species, invertebrates, and fish in upland and lowland Australian Wet Tropics streams. Omnivory was prevalent among the tadpoles and invertebrates. Tadpoles consumed different food according to availability and nutrient quality, but assimilated mainly biofilm and algae. Most tadpoles and invertebrates assimilated the same high-quality foods. Food webs in upland riffles were simplified by local extinction of tadpoles, and were probably simplified in pools in the cooler months by seasonal decline in tadpole abundance. Food-web complexity was increased in some pools by the presence of predatory fish and a greater number of basal sources. As tadpoles are important seasonal components in stream food webs, their local extinction can greatly alter food-web structure and complexity and, possibly, processes such as leaf litter breakdown and sediment accumulation
Economic burden of chronic bronchitis in the United States: a retrospective case-control study

We examined how this later diagnosis may impact health care costs and utilization during the 12 months prior to and 24 months post initial CB diagnosis.Methods: This retrospective case-control analysis used claims data from a large US database from July 1, 2003 through June 30, 2007. Patients with CB aged 40 years and older were propensity matched (N = 11,674) to patients without evidence of COPD or asthma by demographics, CB diagnosis quarter/year, and comorbidities. Group differences were assessed using Student&#39;s t-test and Pearson chi-square test statistics.Results: Six months prediagnosis, CB patients had higher frequencies of any hospitalization (9.6%, 6.7%; P &lt; 0.05), emergency department/urgent care visits (13.3%, 6.7%; P &lt; 0.05), and prescriptions (97.3%, 94.1%; P &lt; 0.05). Six months postdiagnosis, CB patients had 5.6 times more hospitalizations (P &lt; 0.05) and 3.1 times more emergency department/urgent care visits (P &lt; 0.05) compared with controls. Mean total costs (US) for CB patients 12 months prediagnosis were significantly higher than controls (months 12–7: 4212, 3826; P < 0.05; months 6–1: 5289, 4285; P < 0.05). CB patients had higher mean total costs (8919; P &lt; 0.05) 6 months postdiagnosis. Costs remained $2429 higher for CB patients 19&ndash;24 months postdiagnosis (P &lt; 0.05).Conclusion: Health care costs and utilization among CB patients are increased both prior to diagnosis and during the 2 years postdiagnosis. This study suggests that not accurately diagnosing CB early has a substantial impact on health care costs, and that the economic burden for CB patients remains elevated even after adjustment for comorbidities associated with COPD.Keywords: chronic bronchitis, burden, economic, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseas
